Certification

The certification activities of SAFE+ Certification GmbH currently cover plastics and other organic materials (coatings, lubricants, elastomers and thermoplastic elastomers) in contact with drinking water according to the evaluation criteria (BWGL-KTW).

The legal requirements for materials in contact with drinking water have been redesigned in Germany. With the 2nd Amendment Ordinance to the Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV) in December 2012, the Federal Environment Agency was given the task of defining mandatory evaluation criteria for materials and substances in contact with drinking water. In the past, the Federal Environment Agency had published guidelines and recommendations on this subject, which had a less binding status.

According to ยง17 paragraph 3 of the Drinking Water Ordinance, the evaluation criteria become legally binding two years after they have been issued by the Federal Environment Agency. After this date, for construction and maintenance of facilities for the abstraction, treatment and distribution of drinking water only materials that fulfill the requirements of these evaluation criteria must be used.

The Federal Environment Agency has drawn up a recommendation for the certification (confirmation of conformity) of products in contact with drinking water in accordance with the evaluation criteria. An explanatory document with questions and answers on the implementation of these regulatory documents in certification procedures can be found on the website of the Federal Environment Agency in the navigation area Documents: Federal Environment Agency
